Homelessness prevention project,
Gloucestershire
Keys to the Future takes exciting new approaches to reach and engage young people about housing and homelessness.
Through this project, Peer Educators – young people who have been homeless themselves – take their stories into schools, care homes and young offenders’ units to inform their peers about the devastating effects of homelessness.
Over the next three years, 6,000 teenagers in the county will benefit from the project which is supported by the Charles Dunstone Charitable Trust, the Rank Foundation and the Big Lottery Fund. They will learn to avoid the pitfalls that can await young people leaving home, and some of the stereotypes associated with homeless people will be challenged.
The Peer Educators also have the opportunity to further their own education by studying for a BTEC or NVQ in Peer Education.
We also plan to develop:
- peer mentoring so a young person going through housing difficulties or homelessness gets help from someone with personal experience of the situation.
- drama and multi-media sessions.
- new partnerships with local authorities and agencies.
